Lab Bills

Lab Bills

Many patients are getting huge bills from labs and imaging places. These bills originate outside our office. We have no control over them. However if you call labs/imaging they always claim that doctor billed it incorrectly.

What we see, almost all the times,  when the patient receives large bills is because of two things.

It is either due to lab biller using the wrong insurance or  using the wrong diagnostic codes.

We check everything before the lab orders are generated. A copy of the lab order is also shared with you when you get your labs. We do lab draws in office only when we have time. Even when we do lab draws, we send the specimen to the lab as suggested by your insurance.

Once lab biller takes over we have no control over what they enter.

So if you have a bill from the lab, call the lab which has billed you and share the lab order from us (a copy is given to you, if you do not have it, you can request it over chat and we can share that with you again) and go over with them if the correct codes have been used and correct insurance has been used!

Ninety percent of times you realize that was the issue.

Here is a quick intro how to check if correct code and insurance is used for the lab/imaging.

  1. Check the insurance details from the lab order and verify these are exactly same on the claim done by the lab.
  2. Check how our lab order provides a diagnosis code for the test. The number inside the paranthesis following the test on the right,  indicates the diagnosis code from the list on the left. To illustrate this we have drawn arrows. Make sure your individual EOB/claims have same diagnostic codes against same lab codes.

Thank you.
