Tendinitis / Tendinopathy

What Is It?

Inflammation or degeneration of a tendon, causing localized pain and swelling. Common sites: Achilles, rotator cuff (shoulder), patellar, elbow (tennis elbow / golfer elbow).

How Is It Diagnosed?

Clinical exam with provocative testing. Ultrasound to visualize tendon. MRI for rotator cuff tears or complex cases.

How Is It Treated?

Rest and activity modification, ice, NSAIDs, physical therapy and eccentric exercises. Corticosteroid injection for persistent cases (use cautiously near Achilles). Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for chronic tendinopathy.

Tests and Imaging Typically Needed

Clinical diagnosis. Ultrasound of affected tendon. MRI if tear suspected. CBC, uric acid, ESR if inflammatory arthritis in differential.
