Strep Throat (Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis)
What Is It?
Bacterial throat infection caused by Group A Streptococcus. Presents with sudden sore throat, fever, tonsillar exudates, and swollen lymph nodes. Rapid treatment prevents rheumatic fever.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Rapid strep antigen test (RADT). If negative but clinical suspicion high, throat culture. Centor or McIsaac score for pre-test probability.
How Is It Treated?
Penicillin V or amoxicillin x10 days (drug of choice). Amoxicillin single daily dose equally effective. Azithromycin for penicillin allergy. Analgesics (ibuprofen, acetaminophen) for symptom relief.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Rapid strep test, throat culture if RADT negative. Monospot if EBV suspected.
