What Is It?

Infections spread through sexual contact including gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, genital herpes, HPV, trichomonas, and others. Many are asymptomatic and require screening.

How Is It Diagnosed?

NAAT (nucleic acid amplification test) for gonorrhea/chlamydia from urine or swab. Syphilis RPR/VDRL + confirmatory treponemal test. HSV serology or swab. HIV. Hepatitis B/C.

How Is It Treated?

Chlamydia: doxycycline. Gonorrhea: ceftriaxone IM. Syphilis: benzathine penicillin. Herpes: acyclovir, valacyclovir. Trichomonas: metronidazole. Treat partners simultaneously.

Tests and Imaging Typically Needed

NAAT (GC/chlamydia), RPR, HIV, HBV, HCV, HSV IgG, wet prep for trichomonas.
