What Is It?
Psychiatric disorder following exposure to trauma. Symptoms: intrusive memories/flashbacks, avoidance, negative cognitions, hyperarousal. Can develop after any traumatic event.
How Is It Diagnosed?
DSM-5 criteria. PCL-5 screening tool. Rule out TBI, depression, substance use disorders.
How Is It Treated?
First-line: trauma-focused CBT (Prolonged Exposure, EMDR). SSRIs (sertraline, paroxetine - FDA-approved). SNRIs (venlafaxine). Prazosin for nightmares. Psychiatry or psychology referral.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Clinical diagnosis. Screening for comorbid depression, anxiety, and substance use.
