Peripheral Neuropathy
What Is It?
Damage to peripheral nerves causing numbness, tingling, burning pain, and weakness, typically in hands and feet (stocking-glove distribution). Diabetes is the most common cause.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Clinical exam (monofilament, vibration). EMG/nerve conduction study. Labs to identify cause (glucose, B12, thyroid, heavy metals).
How Is It Treated?
Treat underlying cause (glucose control for diabetic neuropathy, B12 replacement). Symptom management: gabapentin, pregabalin, duloxetine, tricyclic antidepressants, topical capsaicin or lidocaine.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
HbA1c, fasting glucose, B12, TSH, BMP, CBC, SPEP, EMG/nerve conduction study.
