Influenza (Flu)

What Is It?

Highly contagious viral respiratory illness. Causes sudden fever, chills, myalgia, headache, cough, and fatigue. Can lead to pneumonia and hospitalization in high-risk patients.

How Is It Diagnosed?

Rapid influenza diagnostic test (RIDT) or molecular assay (PCR) from nasopharyngeal swab. Clinical diagnosis acceptable in high-prevalence season.

How Is It Treated?

Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) within 48 hours of symptom onset for high-risk patients. Supportive care: rest, fluids, analgesics. Annual vaccination strongly recommended.

Rapid flu test or PCR, COVID-19 test, chest X-ray if pneumonia suspected, CBC if severe.
