Hypothyroidism
What Is It?
Underactive thyroid gland producing insufficient thyroid hormone. Causes fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, constipation, and depression.
How Is It Diagnosed?
TSH elevated (>4.5 mIU/L), low free T4. Thyroid antibodies (TPO) if autoimmune cause suspected.
How Is It Treated?
Levothyroxine (T4 replacement), dosed by weight and TSH target. Dose adjusted every 6-8 weeks until stable.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
TSH, free T4, TPO antibodies, CBC, BMP, lipid panel.
