Hypertension (High Blood Pressure)
What Is It?
Hypertension is chronically elevated blood pressure (>=130/80 mmHg). It is the most common cardiovascular risk factor and often has no symptoms.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Blood pressure readings on two or more visits, home monitoring log, kidney function labs (BMP), urinalysis, EKG.
How Is It Treated?
Lifestyle changes (low-sodium diet, exercise, weight loss), ACE inhibitors, ARBs, calcium channel blockers, or thiazide diuretics. Medication titrated to goal <130/80.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
BMP, CBC, lipid panel, urinalysis, EKG, TSH if indicated.
