Gout
What Is It?
Inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystal deposition in joints. Classic presentation: sudden severe pain, swelling, and redness of the big toe joint.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Clinical presentation, serum uric acid (elevated in most), joint aspiration showing monosodium urate crystals (gold standard).
How Is It Treated?
Acute: colchicine, NSAIDs, or corticosteroids. Chronic: allopurinol or febuxostat to lower uric acid below 6 mg/dL. Dietary modifications.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Serum uric acid, BMP (creatinine), CBC, joint aspiration if uncertain.
