Acute Bronchitis
What Is It?
Inflammation of the bronchial airways, almost always viral. Causes cough (with or without sputum) lasting 1-3 weeks, often following a URI.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Clinical diagnosis. Chest X-ray to rule out pneumonia if suspected. Pertussis (whooping cough) PCR if cough >3 weeks.
How Is It Treated?
Supportive care only - no antibiotics unless bacterial superinfection or pertussis confirmed. Albuterol inhaler if wheezing. Cough suppressants and analgesics.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
Clinical diagnosis. Chest X-ray if pneumonia suspected. Pertussis PCR if prolonged cough.
