Atrial Fibrillation
What Is It?
The most common cardiac arrhythmia. Irregular, often rapid heart rhythm arising from chaotic electrical activity in the atria. Increases stroke risk by 5x.
How Is It Diagnosed?
EKG showing irregularly irregular rhythm, absent P waves. Holter monitor for paroxysmal AFib. Echocardiogram to assess cardiac structure.
How Is It Treated?
Rate control (beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers) or rhythm control (cardioversion, antiarrhythmics). Anticoagulation (apixaban, rivaroxaban) to prevent stroke. Ablation for refractory cases.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
EKG, Holter or event monitor, echocardiogram, TSH, BMP, CBC, INR if on warfarin.
