Anxiety Disorders
What Is It?
A group of disorders (generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety) characterized by excessive fear or worry that impairs daily functioning.
How Is It Diagnosed?
Clinical interview, GAD-7 screening tool. Rule out medical causes (hyperthyroidism, cardiac arrhythmia, stimulant use).
How Is It Treated?
SSRIs (sertraline, escitalopram) or SNRIs first-line. Buspirone for GAD. Short-term benzodiazepines only if necessary. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly effective.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
TSH, BMP, CBC, EKG if cardiac symptoms. Urine drug screen if substance use suspected.
