Anemia
What Is It?
Reduction in red blood cell mass or hemoglobin below normal range, reducing oxygen delivery to tissues. Causes fatigue, pallor, dyspnea, and tachycardia. Most common: iron deficiency, B12/folate deficiency, chronic disease.
How Is It Diagnosed?
CBC with differential. Reticulocyte count. Iron studies (serum iron, ferritin, TIBC). B12, folate. Peripheral blood smear.
How Is It Treated?
Iron deficiency: oral iron (ferrous sulfate) or IV iron. B12 deficiency: B12 injections or high-dose oral B12. Folate deficiency: folic acid. Treat underlying cause.
Tests and Imaging Typically Needed
CBC, reticulocyte count, iron studies, ferritin, B12, folate, peripheral smear, TSH, BMP.
Approximate Self-Pay Costs
Office visit: $95-$150. CBC and iron panel: $40-$80. Ferrous sulfate: $5-$10/month. IV iron infusion: $300-$700.
